Overview
The Northern Ireland Buildings Database records that the Killinchy Presbyterian congregation was established in 1630. The present church was built in 1714, largely through the efforts of the Rev. James Reid, and took its cruciform plan in 1739 to accommodate a growing congregation. The first-edition Ordnance Survey map of 1834 shows the church in this form; contemporary memoirs noted that it was capable of holding 700 people.
In the 1830s the building was held by a non-subscribing portion of the congregation, who left in 1839 and built their own church to the south. In the late 1890s the Rev. William Smyth carried out extensive renovations, installing heating and new pews, adding label mouldings to the openings and building the boundary wall; he also built the Anderson Memorial Hall. External steps to the galleries were removed around 1940–50. Northern Ireland listings are not entered on the Historic England list.
