# Jesus Church, Troutbeck

Jesus Church is a Grade II* parish church on the A592 at Troutbeck, Cumbria, in the Diocese of Carlisle: one of only two English churches dedicated as Jesus Church, with a 1736 tower and a Morris & Co east window.

## Overview

Historic England lists a parish church of 1562 with a tower of 1736, remodelled in the mid nineteenth century. Materials are slate-stone rubble with freestone dressings and a slate roof. The plan is nave and chancel under a single roof, with a three-stage unbuttressed west tower and embattled parapet. The main body is sixteenth-century fabric given a plain nineteenth-century Gothic exterior, with six pointed windows to the south, seven to the north, and a five-light Perpendicular east window. Wikipedia notes a church on the site by 1506; Co-Curate records consecration in 1562.

The interior has a west gallery, mid-nineteenth-century benches, and a shallow octagonal font. The five-light east window of 1873 is Pre-Raphaelite glass by William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown, depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. The church is open daily from dawn until dusk, with level access to the main areas.
