# St Luke, Irlams o' th' Height

St Luke’s on Swinton Park Road, Irlams o’ th’ Height, Salford, is a Roman Catholic church of 1969 by Burles, Newton & Partners, built to the liturgical recommendations of the Second Vatican Council, in the Diocese of Salford.

## Overview

A parish was formed in 1922 and a temporary church built in 1924 to designs by H. Greenhalgh of Bolton. Burles, Newton & Partners were appointed in 1963 for a church seating 470; building began in 1966 after financial delay. Bishop Burke laid the foundation stone in October 1967 and the church opened in 1969. The same architects added a presbytery in 1974–75.

Taking Stock describes a steel-framed plan on rafts against mining subsidence, a near-rectangular interior angled at the liturgical east, and a boarded roof that rises to frame the sanctuary. Full-height slit windows light a crucifix without glare. Later furnishings include stained glass by Roy Coomber (2002–3) and Stations of the Cross and other works by the Salford artist Harold Riley (c.2003). The building is not listed. The parish is now Our Lady of Hope.
