# Inverness Cathedral

Inverness Cathedral, the Cathedral Church of St Andrew on Ness Walk, is the Category A Scottish Episcopal cathedral of the Diocese of Moray, Ross and Caithness, built in 1866–69 to designs by Alexander Ross.

## Overview

Bishop Robert Eden promoted a new cathedral after the union of Moray, Ross and Caithness. The foundation stone was laid by the Archbishop of Canterbury on 17 October 1866; worship began in 1869, but a remaining debt of £8,000 delayed consecration until 1874. Historic Environment Scotland describes an English Middle Pointed church with French outline: narthex flanked by square towers (intended spires never built), nave and aisles, short transepts, choir and demi-hexagonal apse, and an octagonal chapter house. Materials are snecked pink Conon freestone with cream Covesea dressings and Westmorland green slates. Ross designed the Caen-stone pulpit (carved by D. & A. Davidson, 1869).
