# St Mary, Lochee (Immaculate Conception)

St Mary’s, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, on High Street, Lochee, Dundee, is a Category A Gothic Revival Roman Catholic church of 1865–66 by Joseph Aloysius Hansom, in the Diocese of Dunkeld.

## Overview

Historic Environment Scotland (LB25338, Category A, 4 February 1965) records a remarkable Gothic Revival church and asymmetrical presbytery by Hansom of London, 1865, rubble-built with ashlar dressings. Originally the Church of the Immaculate Conception, it was Dundee’s third Roman Catholic church and opened on 13 May 1866. Scotland’s Churches Trust describes a simple nave with narrow aisles leading to a polygonal chancel that rises into a spire; tall tower windows light the chancel against a darker nave; a polychrome stone and brick interior; an altarpiece by A. B. Wall of Cheltenham, 1897; stained glass by Mayer of Munich; and a floodlit well some twelve metres deep.
