# Holy Trinity, Horwich

Holy Trinity is a Grade II Commissioners’ parish church on Church Street in Horwich, in the Diocese of Manchester and the Benefice of Horwich and Rivington.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of 1830–31 by F. Bedford (Francis Octavius Bedford), with a chancel of 1903 by R. Knill Freeman, in stone with a slate roof. A four-bay nave continues as porches flanking a west tower; the chancel has a south organ loft. The nave has Y-tracery windows between buttresses with crocketed pinnacles. The tower has octagonal turrets becoming angle buttresses above roof level, a four-centred entrance, a four-face clock and Y-tracery louvred bell openings under an open-traceried embattled parapet. The Ridgway family’s kneeling-camel crest appears on the tower; the church was financed largely by that family.

The interior has chamfered diagonal piers supporting three galleries and plaster rib vaults. A free-standing monument to Joseph Ridgway (died 1842) by R. Westmacott shows a robed woman kneeling at a prie-dieu. Wikipedia notes that the present church was consecrated in 1831 and that a church on the site is recorded before 1552.
