# St John the Baptist, Horrabridge

St John the Baptist is a Grade II* parish church on Station Road, Horrabridge, Devon, in the Diocese of Exeter and the West Dartmoor Mission Community, designed by George Fellowes Prynne and consecrated in 1893.

## Overview

Historic England lists the church as 1893 with a west porch dated 1913, both by Fellowes Prynne. The fabric is snecked greenstone with limestone dressings and slate roofs with raised coped verges, crestings and cross finials. The plan is a west porch, nave, north and south aisles, and chancel with north vestry and south organ chamber. Nave and chancel run in one, with a tall fleche over the crossing of the north and south transepts; aisle roofs are swept down from the nave. Pevsner and Cherry called it probably the finest of Fellowes Prynne’s smaller churches.

Until 1867 Horrabridge formed part of Buckland Monachorum. A chapel of St John the Baptist is recorded on the site from 1256, licensed as a daughter church in 1438 and demolished after the Dissolution. Cottages on the site were taken down in 1891 for the present church. Sir Massey Lopes funded two-thirds of the cost as a memorial to his daughter Louisa and supplied stone, on condition that villagers raised the remainder. A medieval corbel from the earlier chapel stands in the grounds.
