Hoole URC

Hoole United Reformed Church stands on Hoole Road, Chester. It is a mid-twentieth-century Congregational building that became URC, serving Hoole and the post-war estates at Newton.

Overview

The congregation grew from a late-Victorian mission in a tin chapel in Walker Street, later associated with Queen Street Congregational Church. The Hoole History and Heritage Society records a site dedication on Hoole Road on 26 September 1953. The church's own history states that planning permission followed in 1954 and that in May 1957 a tender of £10,740 was accepted from Henry Jones and Sons of Holt for a building designed by architect Kenneth Paterson. Stone-laying took place in November 1957; the church opened in 1958. Complementary wooden halls were erected with the church, with the first permanent halls opened in September 1960 and further buildings completed after a 1964 tender.

The Twentieth Century Society lists the church as completed in 1958 by Kenneth W. Paterson and John S. Macaulay, and records it as unlisted. It is not among the listed buildings of Hoole Ward.
