# Holy Trinity, Torbryan

Holy Trinity is a Grade I former parish church at Torbryan, near Ipplepen in Devon, vested in the Churches Conservation Trust since 1 July 1987.

## Overview

Historic England records an early fifteenth-century parish church with a nineteenth-century vestry, built of roughcast rendered stone under slate roofs. The Churches Conservation Trust and listing describe a single Perpendicular campaign of about 1450–70: nave, chancel, north and south aisles, west tower and two-storey south porch. The three-stage tapering tower has battlements, pinnacles and a five-sided south stair turret. Aisle and east windows are Perpendicular of four and five lights; the porch has a white-limestone fan vault.

The interior keeps a wagon roof to nave and chancel, five-bay arcades on diamond piers with foliage capitals, medieval pews enclosed by early eighteenth-century box pews, and a carved seven-sided pulpit. The outstanding fitting is a medieval rood screen across nave and aisles with parclose screens and an almost complete set of pre-Reformation painted saints. Two panels stolen in 2013 were recovered by the Metropolitan Police, conserved and reinstalled in 2016. Medieval glass survives in the heads of most windows.
