# Holy Trinity, St Andrews

Holy Trinity is the Category A Church of Scotland town kirk on South Street, St Andrews, Fife, a late Gothic reconstruction around a fifteenth-century tower, sometimes called the cradle of the Scottish Reformation.

## Overview

Historic Environment Scotland lists Holy Trinity Church (Town Kirk), South Street (LB40633, designated 27 April 1959). The church was founded in 1410–12; the tower is fifteenth-century, with an ashlar spire and stair-turret spirelet of the sixteenth century. The cruciform church was rebuilt in 1798–1800 by Robert Balfour, altered by Jesse Hall in 1863, and reconstructed again in 1907–09 in a late Scots Gothic manner in ashlar by P. Macgregor Chalmers. Nine bays survive in the present plan; two west arches of the nave and some cylindrical nave piers are original. Grid reference is NO 50917 16665.

The listing highlights the monument to Archbishop Sharp (d.1679): white and black marble, a kneeling effigy on a sarcophagus flanked by Corinthian columns, executed in Holland. Furnishings include two sixteenth-century oak stalls and stained glass from the Edwardian restoration by Douglas Strachan, Louis Davis and others. Wikipedia and the parish site record an earlier church near the cathedral from the twelfth century, John Knox’s preaching here in 1547 and 1559, and the present congregation of Boarhills, Dunino and St Andrews: Holy Trinity.
