# Holy Trinity, Buildwas

Holy Trinity, Buildwas, is a Grade II parish church of medieval origin, rebuilt in 1720 and restored in 1864, in the Diocese of Lichfield, close to the ruins of Buildwas Abbey.

## Overview

Historic England records a regularly coursed gritstone church with ashlar dressings: nave, chancel, west belfry, south porch and north vestry. A cast-iron plate on the porch records the rebuilding of 1720. The nave has round-headed windows with keystones and later Y-tracery; the late-nineteenth-century timber-framed belfry has a steep pyramidal roof. The chancel was gothicised in 1864, with two-light windows and a three-light east window. The interior retains a contemporary west gallery on wooden posts, a richly carved seventeenth-century pulpit, and a king-post nave roof and hammer-beam chancel roof of about 1864.

In the Middle Ages the church belonged to Buildwas Abbey. Monuments include wall memorials to Humphrey Wheeler (d. 1739) and John Clarke (d. 1717) and a brass to Mary Boycott (d. 1656). Listed Grade II on 13 June 1958 (NHLE 1366860). The parish is one of twelve in the Benefice of Haughmond and Wrekin.
