# Holy Cross, Daventry

Holy Cross is a Grade I parish church on Church Walk, Daventry, Northamptonshire, in the Diocese of Peterborough, and the only eighteenth-century town church in the county.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of 1752–58 by David Hiorne in a classical design of ironstone ashlar, with a rusticated ground floor, pedimented west end, and a west tower and spire in the form of an obelisk. The nave has galleried aisles and seven round-arched windows, a modillioned cornice and a balustraded parapet. The chancel has a Venetian east window. The pedimented west porch, with a Doric order, was rebuilt in 1951.

The interior has Doric columns on pedestals, entablatures carrying arches and a ribbed vault. Heraldic glass fills two upper west windows. Monuments include eighteenth- and nineteenth-century grey and white marble wall monuments in the chancel, a finely carved gallery monument of 1707, a monument of 1741 by B. Palmer, and a gallery monument of 1800 by Cox. The church stands on the site of the medieval parish church associated with Daventry Priory.
