Overview
Architects of Greater Manchester, citing The Builder, record the foundation stone laid in 1863 and the church complete in 1864 to designs by Clegg and Knowles of Manchester. The work was promoted as a “shilling church”: Mrs Page, wife of the Revd J. A. Page, incumbent of Tintwistle (in which parish Hollingworth then lay), raised funds by a shilling subscription. The contractors were Warhurst and Sidebottom of Hadfield. The Builder gave the cost as about £1,700 and seating for about 450. The site was given by Mr Taylor of Booth Hall, Blackley.
The church is Early English in style, of millstone grit, with nave, chancel, vestry and porch, and a turret over the main entrance (the 1863 notice placed a turret at the north-west angle). Seats are of stained wood under an open timber roof; there are no galleries. GENUKI records that it was built as a chapel to Tintwistle: Christ Church and became the district church for Hollingworth in 1922. The building is not listed.
