# All Saints, Hessle

All Saints is a Grade I parish church on Southgate, Hessle, East Riding of Yorkshire, in the Diocese of York.

## Overview

Historic England records a twelfth-century nave, early thirteenth-century nave arcades, and a fifteenth-century west tower and spire. In 1868–70 R. G. Smith of Hull lengthened the nave by two bays, widened the aisles and rebuilt the chancel, reusing old materials, and added a north organ chamber. The fabric is ashlar with lead roofs: a three-stage west tower embraced by the aisle extensions, a tall spire with lucarnes, a five-bay aisled nave with north and south porches, and a two-bay chancel with north and south chapels.

Wikipedia and the listing note a medieval church on the site; aisles were added in the thirteenth century and the tower in the fifteenth. A gallery of 1802 was later removed. The church closed in 1840 for two years of roof repairs. The south chapel holds a collection of Romanesque carved stones, including a sagittarius. A north-aisle window is by Morris and Co. The building was listed Grade I in 1967.
