# Mount Zion, Halifax

Mount Zion (listed as Mount Sion Methodist Church and House Attached) is a Grade II* Methodist heritage chapel on Per Lane at Upper Brockholes, Ogden, on the edge of Ogden Moor above Halifax.

## Overview

The listing records a chapel and attached minister’s house of 1773, the chapel rebuilt in 1815, interior refitted about 1870. Dressed stone with ashlar dressings and stone-slate roofs form a south front of round-arched windows and doorways, a vesica plaque reading “This chapel was rebuilt in the year 1815,” and a reset 1773 sundial inscribed “Mount Sion.” A semi-circular north apse holds the organ. Galleries on three sides rest on cast-iron columns. The attached house to the west has mullioned windows.

John Wesley visited and is associated with a first-floor room in the adjoining cottage known as the Prophet’s Chamber. In 1797 the New Connexion (Kilhamites) held the chapel and the Wesleyans left. Regular weekly worship ended in 2014 when the building became a heritage chapel; occasional services continue and it remains licensed for weddings. The chapel history attributes the 1881 interior to Leeming and Leeming. Historic England list entry 1254018; upgraded to Grade II* on 23 November 1973.
