Overview
The congregation’s own history records that Goring Congregational Church was inaugurated on 4 August 1940, after members of Shelley Road Congregational Church in Worthing saw a need in the growing western suburbs. Early services were held in Elm Grove School Hall. Wartime delay meant the first dual-purpose hall, by Messrs Denman of Brighton, had its brick-laying ceremony on 19 June 1948 and opened on 1 March 1949; it remains in use as the church hall.
The present church, designed by F. W. Winward of Weston, Burnett and Thorne of Southampton and built by William Willett (Contractors) Ltd of Hove and London, opened on 16 September 1961 under the Revd Cyril Franks. Contemporary photographs show portal-frame construction and a seating capacity of over 300. A pipe organ was brought from Thundridge in Hertfordshire. The Cornwall Room, linking church and hall, opened on 12 March 1967. The church is part of the United Reformed Church Southern Synod and the Worthing Cluster. It is not listed.
