Overview
The Dictionary of Irish Architects records a new church of 1855–56 by Joseph Welland, consisting of a nave, chancel, north and south transepts and a tower at the west end, consecrated on 24 December 1856 at a cost of £1,860. Drawings in the Representative Church Body Library are signed by Welland. The Stone Database for Northern Ireland describes a medium Gothic church of uncoursed rock-faced basalt rubble with sandstone dressings and a pitched slate roof, a square tower with corner pinnacles, and a sandstone plinth (HB21/16/001).
The east window is by William Wailes; transept windows and a further side window are by James Warrington of London. A Caen-stone pulpit of 1876 was designed by Sir Thomas Drew and executed by A. P. Sharp. Local tradition has sometimes attributed the design to Sir Charles Lanyon, a churchwarden in 1875, but the surviving drawings name Welland. The present building replaced an earlier parish church.
