# St Mary, Gladestry

St Mary’s (St Mary the Virgin) stands in an open churchyard above the B4594 on the north-west side of Gladestry, Powys, a Cadw Grade I medieval Church in Wales parish church in the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon.

## Overview

Cadw lists a handsome church, largely of medieval date, included at Grade I for its openwork timber roofs. The plan comprises nave, chancel with a bellcote above, aisle, western tower and south porch, mainly in local rubble with shale-slate roofs. Wikipedia and the Buildings of Wales volume describe a relatively large church for the village. Interior details recorded by Cadw include an arch-braced roof, a chancel arch with asymmetrical soffit chamfers, a plain circular thirteenth-century font, and a piscina. Furnishings are mainly of 1910 in Gothic style. Five bells were cast in 1719 by Rudhall of Gloucester; a sanctus bell is dated 1921. Some flooring is encaustic tile by William Godwin & Son of Lugwardine. The churchyard is also a Quiet Garden.

Cadw listed the church Grade I on 21 September 1962 (reference 8774). It is in the East Radnor Ministry Area (deanery of Radnor and Builth).
