Gateway Church Wirral, formerly Wirral Christian Centre, is an active Elim Pentecostal Church on Woodchurch Road, Birkenhead, Wirral, Merseyside, England.


### Overview

Gateway Church Wirral, formerly Wirral Christian Centre, is an active Elim Pentecostal Church on Woodchurch Road, Birkenhead, Wirral, Merseyside, England. The building, originally Oxton Road Congregational Church, is a Grade II listed structure.

Built between 1857-1858 and designed by William Cole, the church cost over £5,000, with an additional £2,500 spent on improvements in the 1880s. Damaged by fire in 1992, it was restored but later became redundant and fell into disrepair. In 2008, it was restored again to become the Wirral Christian Centre.

Constructed in rubble stone with Westmorland slate roofs, the church features a wide six-bay nave and a north-side tower with clasping buttresses. The tower includes a west door with a moulded arch, decorative hood mould, paired bell openings, and a battlemented summit with reduced corner pinnacles. The nave has a seven-light west window, a canted baptistry, and three-light windows with Decorated tracery. The interior is a "wide short auditorium over a basement."
