# Garvald Parish Church

Garvald Parish Church in East Lothian is a Category B church with twelfth-century masonry, a north aisle of 1677 and a reworking of 1829, historically the Church of Scotland church of Garvald and Bara.

## Overview

Historic Environment Scotland (LB7341, Category B, 5 February 1971) records an 1829 reworking and extension of an earlier church, incorporating the north aisle of 1677 and partial remains of a diamond-patterned twelfth-century band course on the west and north elevations, with large squared masonry. The 1829 work is squared and coursed rubble with a base course; the vestry chancel is snecked rubble with a harled east gable. Iron jougs hang by the entrance, a rare survival shared with Spott Church. The listing notes that the church was originally linked to the nunnery at Haddington.

The churchyard has a notable collection of gravestones from the seventeenth century onward. The Church of Scotland sold the building in 2024; the purchaser stated an intention to retain it for Christian worship. HES Category B listing cannot be stored on the list-entry field used for Historic England and Cadw URLs.
