# Our Lady Star of the Sea & St Drostan, Fraserburgh

Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Drostan on Commerce Street, Fraserburgh, is a Roman Catholic church of 1895–96 by Ellis & Wilson of Aberdeen, dedicated by Bishop McDonald on 18 June 1896. It serves the linked parishes of Peterhead and Fraserburgh in the Diocese of Aberdeen.

## Overview

The parish history records a cornerstone laid on 1 June 1895 and a total cost of £3,140, including the feu, met by public subscription. The principal benefactress was Mrs Grattan-Bellew, mother of Lady Saltoun. Ellis & Wilson had also worked on St Mary’s Cathedral, Aberdeen. The church was built to seat about four hundred, though there were then only forty to fifty communicants, to serve both the town and the seasonal herring workers from Barra, Eriskay and South Uist. Earlier worship had been in houses, the Dalrymple Hall and a building in Lodge Walk.

Aberdeenshire’s Historic Environment Record lists the church but records no Historic Environment Scotland listed-building number. The dedication joins Mary, Star of the Sea, with St Drostan, associated with the conversion of the north-east. The church remains in use, with advertised weekday opening for visitors.
