# Fetlar Kirk

Fetlar Kirk is a Category B listed former Church of Scotland kirk between Tresta Beach and Papil Water on Fetlar, Shetland. Friends of Fetlar Kirk bought the building from the Church of Scotland in 2021.

## Overview

Historic Environment Scotland records a traditional rectangular hall church of 1790: one by two bays, harled, with droved sandstone ashlar dressings. The east entrance gable has a two-leaf boarded door with a semicircular fanlight and a round-arched window above, and a stugged ashlar gabled belfry. North and south elevations have round-arched windows with timber traceried coloured glazing. A gabled vestry projects from the west gable and incorporates a seventeenth-century memorial panel. The narrow plan gives the kirk a tall outline compared with other Shetland churches of the date. Traceried side windows appear to be a later nineteenth-century remodelling.

The kirk replaced earlier churches on the site. The harl-pointed kirkyard wall and a mid-eighteenth-century classical monument to James Bonar (1752) and Jean Smith (1737) are included in the listing. The building is used for community events and for services of several denominations. Scottish listings cannot be stored as listEntryUrl on this site.
