Overview
Carrick Knowe began as an extension charge in 1937. The church hall opened on 30 November 1937; war delayed the church itself. Building began in October 1950, the foundation stone was laid on 23 June 1951, and the church was opened and dedicated on 27 March 1953. Scotland’s Churches Trust describes a Norman design with strong Scottish character, and notes it as the last post-war church to be built of stone: external walls of Blaxter dressed stone and Darney rubble from Northumberland quarries.
Furnishings in Scottish Border oak were commissioned by the Church of Scotland for the 1938 Empire Exhibition in Glasgow. The congregation records a baptismal bowl gifted by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, a tapestry from Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh, and an organ installed by Ronald Smith in 1973. The building is not a listed historic asset.
