# St Mary, East Haddon

St Mary the Virgin is a Grade II* parish church on Main Street, East Haddon, Northamptonshire, in the Diocese of Peterborough.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of the twelfth to fourteenth centuries with nineteenth-century restoration, built of regular coursed lias with a slate roof: nave, south aisle, chancel and west tower. Chancel windows with reticulated tracery are attributed to Mackesay's restoration of 1872-74 or to E. F. Law in 1877. The Perpendicular three-stage west tower has angle buttresses, transomed two-light belfry windows and a crenellated parapet of 1673 with truncated pinnacles. Inside, a fourteenth-century double-chamfered chancel arch sits on twelfth-century nook-shafted responds with leaf capitals. The nave has a fourteenth-century four-bay south arcade of double-chamfered arches on octagonal piers. A monument to Clarke Adams (d.1776) is by William Cox.

The Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture notes that the south aisle was rebuilt in 1839, that the font is an elaborately carved twelfth- or thirteenth-century piece, and that a priest was recorded at Domesday. Between 1155 and 1175 William de Dive granted the church to Sulby Abbey. Parish records name clergy from 1237.
