Overview
The Dictionary of Irish Architects records a new Romanesque church by William Henry Byrne & Son, designed in 1909–10, with tenders invited in September 1912 and altars of 1915. Parish history states that Cardinal Logue laid the foundation stone on 15 August 1913, the feast of the Assumption, with Dr McKenna, Bishop of Clogher, present. The church replaced the earlier St Patrick’s of the 1820s after Pomeroy became a parish in 1836, formed from parts of Donaghmore, Termonmaguirk and Desertcreat.
The Northern Ireland Stone Database describes a Gothic Revival / round-arched church of three-bay nave with transepts, a recessed round-arched doorway with polished granite columns below a large rose window, a bell gable, stepped quoins and a pitched slate roof. Primary stone is Sherwood sandstone with Dungannon sandstone and Newry granodiorite. The building is listed Grade B (HB09/02/003). The Archdiocese of Armagh has referred to it as a listed building beside a later Adoration Chapel opened in 2008.
