# Dundee Cathedral

St Andrew’s Roman Catholic Cathedral on Nethergate, Dundee, is a Category B listed church of 1835 by George Mathewson, Dundee’s first post-Reformation Catholic church and, since 1924, cathedral of the Diocese of Dunkeld.

## Overview

Historic Environment Scotland lists 150 Nethergate, including the presbytery and a former sea wall to the south, designated on 4 February 1965. Mathewson designed a rectangular-plan aisleless church with a Gothic façade, basement halls and a four-storey, five-bay presbytery against the south gable. The façade is pale sandstone ashlar with tall Tudor-arch traceried windows, hoodmoulds and mask stops, and buttresses with crocketed finials; the sides are rubble with ashlar dressings under a grey slate roof. C. J. Menart added the apse in 1921. The building occupies the site of the old Town Hospital; the southern boundary wall is an eighteenth-century sea wall of that hospital.

In the 1840s the basement halls housed the only Catholic school in the city. The church became a cathedral in 1924. It remains the mother church of the Catholic Diocese of Dunkeld.
