# Dentdale Chapel

Dentdale Chapel is a Grade II listed Methodist church on The Laning, Dent, Cumbria, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

## Overview

Historic England lists a Wesleyan chapel dated 1834: a rectangular single-cell building of thin watershot coursed rubble with large quoins, all whitewashed, and a graduated blue slate roof with two courses of stone slate at the eaves. The south front has two round-headed six-pane windows with Y-tracery and a central datestone lettered “WESLEYAN / 1834 / CHAPEL”. The west gable has a tall round-headed opening containing a square-headed doorway and a window above. The interior has an internal porch, pitch-pine dado and pulpit, a moulded plaster cornice, and a ceiling with a moulded roundel and diamond ornaments. Local histories state that the Society of Friends built a meeting house here in 1701; Wesleyans, who had been meeting in a barn after Methodism returned to the dale in 1803, bought the meeting house and land from the Quakers in 1834 for £20. After Methodist Union in 1933 the society became Dentdale Methodist Church. The listing’s “now United Reformed church” note is outdated; the building remains in Methodist use. A former Quaker burial ground adjoining was given to the trustees in 1961.
