# St George, Damerham

St George’s is a Grade I parish church on Church Lane in Damerham, on the Hampshire–Wiltshire border in the New Forest, in the Diocese of Salisbury and the Western Downland group of parishes.

## Overview

The manor was a Saxon royal estate; in the mid-tenth century King Edmund granted Damerham to Queen Æthelflæd on condition that it pass to Glastonbury Abbey, which held it in 1066 and 1086. The listing describes a church of twelfth-century origins with a south transeptal tower; a twelfth-century north aisle and chapel; a thirteenth-century south chapel and aisle; fifteenth-century rebuilding of the chancel and north aisle and addition of the south porch; and a seventeenth-century rebuilding of the tower. Walls are flint and squared ironstone with Chilmark dressings.

The south porch retains a twelfth-century tympanum of St George, a thirteenth-century mandorla, and a finely carved fifteenth-century wagon roof. Wagon roofs with moulded ribs and bosses also cover the nave and chancel. The church was transferred from Wiltshire to Hampshire with the parish in 1895.
