# Craigie Symington Church

Craigie Symington Parish Church is a Category A listed Church of Scotland church at Symington, South Ayrshire: a Norman foundation of 1160 still in use after an eighteenth-century recasting and a 1919 restoration.

## Overview

Historic Environment Scotland lists the Parish Church and Graveyard (LB14357, designated 13 April 1971) as containing Norman work in a rebuilt T-shaped structure, naming P. MacGregor Chalmers, 1919. Scotland’s Churches Trust records a church founded in 1160 by Symon Loccard, from whom the village name (originally Symonstown) is derived. The original church now forms the nave; the present appearance follows additions and alterations of 1797 and Chalmers’s restoration of 1919, which revealed walls and oak roof beams that had been plastered over.

Norman arched windows, a piscina and an ancient oak-beamed ceiling survive. Much of the stained glass is by Douglas Strachan. Two crosses in the chancel floor mark the grave of the Reverend Gage Boyd, who oversaw the 1919 restoration, and remains found under the chancel and believed to be those of Symon Loccard. The church opens by arrangement. Scottish listing is Category A; there is no Historic England or Cadw list entry.
