Overview
The congregation began as a mission of Above Bar Congregational Church, Southampton. Meetings in Hythe are recorded from the 1790s; Ebenezer Chapel was built in 1845 and still stands in the village under another use. The present church on New Road was built in 1914 as Hythe Congregational Church. The foundation stone was laid on 10 June 1914 and the building opened on 7 November 1914. Contemporary press reported a plain, substantial church seating about 350, designed by Brightcliffe and built by H. Stephens and Son of Southampton. The church joined the United Reformed Church in 1972. Halls were added later, with extensions in 1964 and 1967; in 2006–07 those extensions were demolished and the original sanctuary reordered in a two-storey rebuild. No Historic England list entry has been confirmed for the present building.
