# Clogher Cathedral

St Macartan’s Cathedral is a Church of Ireland cathedral in Clogher, one of two cathedrals in the Diocese of Clogher (with St Macartin’s, Enniskillen), in the Province of Armagh.

## Overview

Tradition holds that a monastery and bishopric were founded at Clogher around 490 by St Macartan on the instruction of St Patrick. Later medieval churches on the site were rebuilt in 1041 and again in 1295, and the church, abbey and bishop’s court were burned in 1396. The present building was erected in 1744 to a neo-classical design by James Martin. The Stone Database for Northern Ireland records a pedimented nave with recessed round-arched windows, transepts, a south-east vestry and an east Venetian window, a square bell tower with balustrade and corner pinnacles, and a pitched slate roof in Tyrone Carboniferous limestone and sandstone rubble. Nearby stand remains of two high crosses and a sundial. The cathedral is a Grade A listed building (HB13/02/001), listed on 7 March 1977 including walls and gates.
