Overview
Historic England records a parish church of 1826 by James Plowman for James Langston: regularly coursed and dressed limestone rubble with slate roofs, a wide aisleless nave, a short chancel with vestries in the angles, and a west tower closely modelled on that of Magdalen College, Oxford, reduced by a third. The six-stage tower has hexagonal angle buttresses, a pierced embattled parapet, crocketed pinnacles and a multitude of carved grotesque heads. It is listed at II* on account of the tower as a local landmark.
The interior has a lierne vault in the tower and a five-bay hammer-beam nave roof based on the hall of Christ Church, Oxford. Nave benches and choir stalls of 1826 have blind Gothic tracery. The chancel roof was painted and gilded in 1884 by Clayton and Bell, who also painted the reredos scenes. A Jacobean chest from the medieval church survives in the north-east corner of the nave. The medieval church down the hill is now the Churchill Heritage Centre.
