# Christ Church, Shamley Green

Christ Church is the Grade II parish church of Shamley Green, Surrey, an Early English chapel of 1863 that became a parish church in 1881, in the Diocese of Guildford.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church of 1863 in Early English style: sandstone blocks, roughly coursed, with ashlar dressings and plain tiled roofs. The plan is nave with south transept chapel, chancel to the east and gabled south porch. A bellcote and needle spire sit on a shingled tapering base over the nave ridge. Fenestration is lancet, with a three-light and triple-roundel east window. The interior has a braced roof, a triple-bay chancel arch on nook shafts with angel corbels, a triple arcade to the south chapel with paired black marble piers, late-nineteenth-century east-wall painting, and a round-bowl font.

Wikipedia records that it was built as a chapel of ease to St John the Baptist, Wonersh, on land purchased from H. Street; the foundation stone was laid by Archdeacon John Utterton. It became an independent parish church as Christ Church in 1881. The parish is Shamley Green, in the Diocese of Guildford.
