# Christ Church, Ottershaw

Christ Church is a Grade II parish church on Guildford Road, Ottershaw, Surrey, in the Diocese of Guildford, one of the few polychromatic brick churches by Sir George Gilbert Scott.

## Overview

Sir Edward Colebrooke, who came to Ottershaw in 1859, built a chapel on his estate in 1863 as a memorial to his deceased son; it became the village church and was consecrated in 1864. Historic England lists the building (as Christchurch) from 18 June 1973. Scott designed it in a thirteenth-century manner. The listing notes that extensive brick polychromy is unusual in his work: only four of his churches use it in this way. The land was given from the Ottershaw Estate by Sir Thomas Edward Colebrooke, who met the building cost and endowment.

A tower, the gift of Edward Gibb, replaced the original spire in 1885. The font and pulpit are original to the church. Stained glass includes windows by C. E. Kempe, installed in 1901 in place of plain glass; Kempe also designed the altarpiece, made by Norman and Burt with carved figures from Oberammergau. Parish rooms were added in the 1990s.
