# Christ Church, Nailsworth

Christ Church is a Grade II listed chapel on Newmarket Road, Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, now a Local Ecumenical Partnership of Baptist, Methodist and United Reformed congregations.

## Overview

Historic England lists the building as removed to this site in 1881 and formerly known as Shortwood Chapel. The front is a large pedimented gable in classical style, two storeys of coursed and dressed rubble with ashlar dressings, four pilasters with fluted capping and a modillion cornice. An arched first-floor window with sub-Venetian tracery opens the pediment. Three bays have segment-headed windows with marginal glazing; the arched entrance has panelled spandrels. A tablet left of the entrance records the chapel’s history from 1716 at Shortwood. The vessel is seven bays long. A secession from Forest Green founded the Shortwood Baptist congregation about 1705, with a meeting-house of 1714–15 and a rebuilding of 1837; in 1881 the congregation moved nearer the town. In 1967 Shortwood united with Forest Green Congregationalists as Christ Church; the Newmarket Road chapel became the permanent place of worship in 1972, when the church also joined the United Reformed Church while keeping Baptist Union links. Methodist worship is part of the present LEP.
