# Christ Church, Croydon

Christ Church is a Church of England parish church on Sumner Road, Croydon, in the Diocese of Southwark. The Diocese records an 1851 church by Samuel Sanders Teulon in Gothic style, of brick with flint facing and Bath stone dressings.

## Overview

Structural problems led to closure in 1978 and a faculty for demolition after a consistory court in 1982. Listing in 1983 blocked total demolition. In December 1985 fire destroyed most of the building except three western bays and the chancel. Maurice Taylor and the K. C. White Partnership designed a new church retaining the undamaged west end; it was completed in April 1991 and opened by the Bishop of Southwark in June 1991.

The surviving Teulon west end now serves as a hall, with a modern worship area, offices and meeting rooms attached. The Church Heritage Record states that the present building is not listed. The parish of Christ Church Broad Green stands north of Croydon town centre, near West Croydon station.
