# St Mary the Virgin, Charlton Mackrell

St Mary the Virgin at West Charlton, Charlton Mackrell, Somerset, is a Grade II* cruciform parish church of thirteenth-century origin, restored in the 1790s and 1847, in the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of thirteenth-century origins, restored 1792–94 and 1847, of local lias with Ham stone ashlar and stone-slate roofs: nave, chancel, transepts, south porch, north-east vestry and a crossing tower. The north transept retains a fine five-light curvilinear window of about 1300–1340; much other tracery is nineteenth-century. The interior is spacious but almost wholly Victorian, including a wind-braced chancel roof and a richly decorated stone reredos; an ogee piscina may be fourteenth-century. The 1847 work removed the singing gallery, rebuilt porch, roofs and most windows, and added the vestry. The parish is part of the benefice of Somerton with the Charltons and Kingsdon. Listed Grade II* on 17 April 1959 (NHLE 1056728).
