# Chapel of St Mary the Virgin, Clumber Park

The Chapel of St Mary the Virgin at Clumber Park is a Grade I estate chapel of 1886–89 by Bodley and Garner for the seventh Duke of Newcastle, in the care of the National Trust.

## Overview

Historic England records a Decorated Revival chapel of polychromatic Steetley and Runcorn sandstone ashlar with lead roofs: nave, chancel, crossing tower and spire, transepts, vestries and lady chapel. It replaced an unfinished chapel by T. C. Hine for the fifth Duke. The Bishop of Southwell opened the building on 22 October 1889. Pevsner called it one of Bodley and Garner’s masterpieces. Kempe glass, Bodley screens and fittings by the Revd Ernest Geldart furnish the interior. The house was demolished in the 1930s; the National Trust reopened the chapel after acquiring the park. Listed Grade I on 13 February 1967 (NHLE 1045032). The chapel is in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, parish of Worksop Priory.
