# St Ignatius, Carryduff

St Ignatius is a Church of Ireland parish church on the Saintfield Road in Carryduff, County Down, a modern hexagonal church consecrated in 1965 and dedicated to Ignatius of Antioch.

## Overview

Carryduff grew as a Belfast commuter settlement after the Second World War. Church of Ireland services began in a local barn in 1952; a dual-purpose hall with a spire, dedicated on 30 October 1954, followed. The foundation stone of the present church, a block of polished Mourne granite now beneath the font in the Jeremy Taylor Chapel, was laid on 19 September 1964. Donald A. Shanks designed a polygonal nave joined to the hall by a small chapel. The church was consecrated on 2 October 1965 by Bishop F. J. Mitchell of Down and Dromore; Metropolitan Anthony Bloom preached.

The building is loosely hexagonal, with irregular concrete-framed windows of coloured leaded glass and a geometric tiled roof whose six gables meet at a central node. A white-rendered exterior and a slender spire mark the west end. The Dean Good Memorial Hall complex, designed by Ernest Knox architects, was dedicated on 6 October 1990. The church is not on the Northern Ireland statutory list.
