## Buildwas Abbey, Telford

Buildwas Abbey was a Cistercian monastery located in Shropshire, England, near Ironbridge. 


### Overview

Buildwas Abbey was a Cistercian monastery located in Shropshire, England, near Ironbridge. It was founded in 1135 by Bishop Roger de Clinton as a Savigniac monastery and was dedicated to St. Mary and St. Chad. The abbey was a centre of learning with a substantial library and was noted for its discipline. 

The abbey was used as an agent by Plantagenet in their attempts to subdue Ireland and Wales and had a daughter house in each country. However, the economic and demographic crises of the 14th century and conflict in the Welsh Marches brought about its decline. 

The abbey was suppressed in 1536 as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII. Remains of the abbey church and monk's quarters can still be seen today and are in the care of English Heritage.
