# Brampton Old Church

Brampton Old Church (the Church of St Martin) is a Grade II* redundant church about a mile west of Brampton, Cumbria, in the Diocese of Carlisle. It stands on the site of a pre-Hadrianic Roman fort on the Stanegate.

## Overview

Historic England lists a disused church of the twelfth century with later alterations, in red sandstone rubble walls, partly of reused stone from the Roman Wall, with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. It formerly comprised tower, nave and chancel; only the chancel and a porch of 1861 remain, with a sexton’s lean-to on the north. The nave and tower were demolished between 1787 and 1789, the stone used to improve the chapel in Brampton. The porch has oak doors and iron gates of 1891. The chancel has a round-headed Norman lancet in the south wall; other lancets and the east window are of 1891. A west-gable belfry dates from 1788. The church was declared redundant in 1978 and interior furnishings were removed. The south wall retains a piscina and aumbry, possibly twelfth century and repositioned. Listing NGR: NY5101461557.

Wikipedia records that St Martin’s in the town (1878, by Philip Webb) replaced this church as the parish church. The wider site is also a scheduled monument (Roman fort and medieval church).
