Blessed Virgin Mary, Stogumber

The Church of St Mary is a Grade I parish church on High Street, Stogumber, Somerset, in the Diocese of Bath and Wells and the Quantock Towers Benefice.

Overview

Historic England lists a medieval parish church whose lower tower stages and west bay of the south aisle date from the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, with the remainder of the fifteenth century. J. D. Sedding restored it in 1873–75. The fabric is red sandstone rubble, squared and coursed on the tower’s north face, with Ham stone dressings and slate roofs. The plan is a chancel, five-bay nave, seven-bay north aisle, three-bay south chapel, south-west tower, and north and south porches.

The three-stage crenellated tower has diagonal buttresses and gargoyles. Perpendicular arcades have foliage capitals in the north aisle, including a green man and Instruments of the Passion. The chancel roof was stencil-decorated by the incumbent Edward Jones (1871–1907). Monuments include a brass to Margery Windham (d.1585) and the Mannerist canopy tomb of Sir George Sydenham (d.1597) with effigies of Sir George, his two wives and three infants. Some sixteenth-century bench ends, a mid-eighteenth-century brass candelabra by Thomas Bayley of Minehead, and three late medieval Flemish glass roundels survive.
