# Blessed John Duns Scotus, Gorbals

Blessed John Duns Scotus is a Roman Catholic parish church on Ballater Street in the Gorbals, Glasgow, served by Franciscan friars of the Order of Friars Minor. It is in the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

## Overview

Wikipedia records that the present church was completed in 1975 on the site of St Luke's Church. Canmore lists 270 Ballater Street as the twentieth-century church and friary, also known as the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Luke and the Blessed John Duns Franciscan Friary. The National Churches Trust describes the building as shaped like the prow of a ship. It is not a listed building.

Franciscans had built St Francis' Church in the Gorbals in 1868 (Gilbert Blount; rebuilt by Pugin and Pugin, Category A). After later closures, Blessed John Duns Scotus became the only remaining Catholic church in the district. In 1993 the forearm relic of St Valentine, given to the Franciscans in 1868, was moved here and later enshrined. A fire in 2005 damaged the church; restoration led to reopening in 2010. The parish maintains a monthly Mass in Lithuanian.
