# Blackheath & Charlton Baptist Church

Blackheath & Charlton Baptist Church stands at Marlborough Lane on Shooters Hill Road, a Baptist church whose present building dates from 1905.

## Overview

The fellowship traces its origins to 1863, when residents of Blackheath sought Charles Haddon Spurgeon’s permission to start a separate congregation. An earlier building on the opposite side of Shooters Hill Road was outgrown. Pevsner dates the present large church to 1905; it originally had a gallery. In 1976–77 a floor was inserted so that the worship space sits at first-floor level. The building does not appear on the National Heritage List for England.

Published architectural detail beyond the 1905 date is scarce. The congregation remains a working Baptist church at SE7 7DF.
