# St Peter, Birkdale

St Peter's is a Grade II Anglican parish church on St Peter's Road, Birkdale, Southport, in the Diocese of Liverpool.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of 1870-71 by T. D. Barry and Sons, with a porch tower added in 1886-87 and transepts, vestries and a rebuilt chancel in 1907. The style is Decorated Gothic Revival. Fabric is coursed sandstone rubble under a slate roof in blue and purple bands. The plan is a nave with north and south aisles, a porch tower in front of the south aisle, north and south transepts, and a chancel with north and south vestries.

The square three-stage tower has angle buttresses, a north-west vice, pierced parapet, corner gargoyles and crocketed pinnacles. Low lean-to aisles have two-light windows with quatrefoil tracery; the nave clerestory is of pointed quatrefoils. There is a four-light west window and a five-light east window. Inside, six-bay arcades have double-chamfered arches on polished columns with carved capitals. The listing notes a good carved reredos and organ case. The church served Birkdale as the Victorian seaside town expanded.
