# Bingley URC

Bingley United Reformed Church stands on Dryden Street, Bingley, West Yorkshire, beside the River Aire in the old town conservation area. The present chapel opened for worship on 29 April 1818 and serves a congregation whose recorded meetings in Bingley go back to the seventeenth century.

## Overview

The church's own history records a Nonconformist chapel in Bingley known as the Presbyterian Dissenting Chapel, later Independent and then Congregational, with its first minister, Accepted Lister, installed in 1695. Oliver Heywood noted a meeting at Marley Hall on 5 September 1667. The Telegraph and Argus, reporting the 2018 bicentenary, states that worship in Bingley is attested from at least 1667, that the congregation moved from Chapel Lane to Dryden Street, and that the 1818 building cost £1,200. The National Churches Trust records that the chapel was extended by a third in 1845 and remains a simple building.

The church is not listed. Bradford Council planning coverage states that it was listed in 1982 but delisted in 1995 after alterations reduced its significance. The same reports describe a nineteenth-century stone-slate roof in a conservation area. The congregation is now United Reformed.
