Overview
Baptist witness in Chadsmoor is dated from 1874, when the first members met in a miner’s house. A tin chapel costing about £500 was built in 1876 for families who had moved from the Black Country; wind destroyed it the following year. A brick chapel opened in 1879. When that building became too small, the present larger chapel was built at a cost of about £850, described at the time as handsome and commodious and said to seat 250. The hammer used to lay the foundation stones and a ceremonial silver key remain on display. The interior follows Baptist practice: pulpit, communion table, and a baptistry in front of the table. The church marked 150 years of witness in 2024.
The building is not on the National Heritage List for England. No architect’s name has been confirmed for the present chapel. There is no diocese or parish in the Anglican sense.
