# Beauchief Abbey

Beauchief Abbey on Beauchief Abbey Lane, Sheffield, is a Grade II* remnant of a Premonstratensian house, now the Church of St Thomas à Becket, a liberty within the Diocese of Sheffield.

## Overview

Historic England records remains of a Premonstratensian abbey, now a church, of about 1175 and 1662, restored in the nineteenth century. Robert Fitzranulph founded the house (dissolved 1536). Edward Pegge established the church and restored the remains: a nave, truncated west tower and attached wall fragments of coursed rubble and ashlar with stone slate roofs. A twelfth-century south doorway is reglazed as a window; reset Norman and fourteenth-century doorways survive on the tower. The interior has a nineteenth-century queen-post roof, seventeenth-century box pews and a panelled octagonal oak pulpit. Listed Grade II* on 1 May 1952 (NHLE 1271291); the abbey precinct is a scheduled monument.

The house was dedicated to St Mary and St Thomas the Martyr as a daughter of Welbeck. Since 1932 the building has belonged to the people of Sheffield rather than the Church of England, with worship continuing in the Diocese of Sheffield.
