# St Andrew, Barnsbury

St Andrew’s on Thornhill Square / Bridgeman Road, Barnsbury, Islington, is a Grade II Church of England parish church in the Diocese of London, built for the Thornhill estate.

## Overview

Historic England lists the Church of St Andrew (NHLE 1195481). The list describes an Anglican church of 1852–54 by Francis B. Newman and John Johnson, in snecked Kentish ragstone with Bath stone dressings, an ashlar spire and a slate roof with fish-scale patterning: chancel, vestries, transepts, aisles and a south-west tower and spire, all under their own pitched roofs, in pointed-arched Decorated Gothic. George Thornhill gave the site in 1852. The church was consecrated in 1854 by Bishop Blomfield. It was designed as a large estate church (contemporary accounts give seating of about 1,650). The building has been on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register after falling stone from the spire and settlement in the north-east vestry and chancel.
