# St Stephen, Barbourne

St Stephen’s is a Grade II parish church on St Stephen’s Street, Barbourne, Worcester, in the Diocese of Worcester, built to serve the suburb north of the city in the ancient parish of Claines.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church of 1861–62 in Middle Pointed style: sandstone ashlar with a plain tile roof, an aisled nave and chancel with north vestry and south Lady Chapel, and a three-stage tower set to the south-west. The listing names Charles Preedy, a Birmingham architect; contemporary bills for the church, certified on 18 July 1862, are signed by Frederick Preedy. The south porch has a pointed moulded arch on paired marble columns with stiff-leaf capitals. The west gable is lit by a four-light Decorated window above a gabled porch. Inside are Decorated arcades with foliate capitals, an open timber roof, and original pews, pulpit, stone font and choir fittings; stained glass to the north is probably by Hardman.

Chris Pickford records a large sandstone building with a pinnacled south-west tower, consecrated on 21 August 1862. John Taylor & Co of Loughborough supplied the original tower bell in 1862. A Joyce of Whitchurch clock with four dials was added in 1882.
